What is at-home test verification?
At-home test verification is the process of confirming that a rapid antigen self-test was performed by a specific person, according to the kit's instructions, at a known time, and of recording the result as evidence an organisation can rely on. It sits between self-reporting, which trusts the person, and in-person testing, which brings the person to a site.
The chain
Remote rapid testing produces a result nobody else saw. Verification adds identity, procedure and time. Verification produces evidence, in the form of a certificate or record. Evidence enables compliance: an employer, school or programme can show that screening happened.
How it developed
During the pandemic, verification meant a human witness: pharmacists supervising autotests in France, supervised self-tests in Germany, video proctors for travel testing, photo uploads to health records in Italy and Ireland. Companies such as Certific and eMed built services around certified remote testing. When the emergency ended, so did most witnessed programmes, because a witness per test does not scale.
Automated verification
Automated at-home test verification uses the phone camera and software to confirm identity and procedure without a witness, then issues a certificate. It costs per screening rather than per supervisor hour, so it can run daily across many sites, which is what employers, schools and care settings need in a respiratory season.
What it is not
It is not a diagnosis; the kit remains the diagnostic product. It is not an official health certificate unless a third party chooses to accept it. And it is not surveillance: a well-designed system shows the organisation a status and a certificate, not a video, and lets the person control who sees their result.
